Lucy Van Horne
FOUNDER AND TUTOR
Lucy's fascination with language began at a young age, shaped by her multicultural upbringing with a French mother. Fluent in both French and English from childhood, she quickly developed a deep affection for Spanish. This innate passion for languages led Lucy to Middlebury College, where she earned a degree in International Relations, with a specialized focus on European Languages & Culture. Subsequently, she pursued advanced studies through Middlebury's post-graduate Teacher Education program. Lucy further enriched her pedagogy with vast experience studying and teaching abroad, both in Spain and Latin America.
In 2000, Lucy earned her California Teaching Credential, ultimately securing her a tenured position as a Spanish and French educator at Los Altos High School. Throughout her time in the classroom, Lucy recognized the immense benefits of one-on-one attention for her students outside the traditional setting. In 2009, she was inspired to create vis-à-vis, a personalized tutoring service committed to crafting tailored language learning experiences for each student, aligned with their unique learning styles.
Lucy's curiosity around learning differences led her to The Urban School where she served as the school’s Learning Services Associate. In addition, Lucy has garnered certifications as a Mindfulness Educator and Social Emotional Learning Facilitator through Argonaut School.
Beyond her classroom and tutoring endeavors, Lucy acts as a teen coach and mentor to kids and is a co-developer of The Steady Hall, an organization dedicated to guiding teenage girls in achieving equilibrium between academic success and personal well-being through workshops and programs.
Lucy’s hallmark lies in her exceptional ability to establish clear, patient, and relatable connections with her students, facilitating their understanding of the intricate nuances of grammar and language.
